The Greene County varsity football team ran its record to 2-1 with a 13-3 victory over Kuemper Catholic on the Linduska Field turf Friday night. It was an ugly game with 13 Ram penalties costing them 110 yards along with three turnovers, but the team managed to overcome the miscues and pick up the win.
The first half was a defensive battle with neither team able to score. The Rams had their chances, especially in the first quarter when a Bryce Stalder 54-yard touchdown run was called back due to a holding penalty.
The Knights scored the first points of the contest with a 30-yard field goal in the third quarter. Greene County answered quickly. Richard Daugherty fielded the Knight kickoff and raced 88 yards to the 3-yard line before getting caught. Stalder punched into the end zone for the touchdown. Nathan Behne booted the extra point to give the Rams a 7-3 lead.
The two defenses battled for the rest of the game. The Knights overlooked Ram Patrick Daugherty in the fourth quarter. He broke free early in the final quarter and rambled 51 yards to score. A bad snap on the PAT try forced a pass into the end zone that went incomplete but the Rams held a 13-3 lead.
The Rams passed for 70 yards and ran for 215 for a total of 285 yards. The defense limited Kuemper to 64 yards on the ground and 114 through the air.
Stalder completed seven out of 16 passes. He was intercepted three times. Jackson Morton snared four passes for 43 yards. Max Riley caught two aerials for 14 yards. Richard Daugherty grabbed a 13-yard pass.
